Traditional waterproofing involves installing a substrate, then applying a liquid membrane or sheet membrane, waiting for it to cure, and then tiling. With Wedi, the board is the waterproofing. Once the joints are sealed with Wedi 610 Adhesive Sealant, or equivalent the system is ready for tile in minutes, not days.
A 1800×900 sheet of cement board weighs roughly 10 Kg and requires a circular saw or scoring tool that generates silica dust. A Wedi board of the same size weighs less than 3kg and can be cut cleanly with a simple utility knife.
Because it is a rigid foam board, Wedi is perfectly flat and dimensionally stable. It won’t warp or rot. For large-format tiles—which require an exceptionally flat surface to prevent “lippage”—Wedi provides a much better foundation than uneven cement board.
The most significant hurdle is the cost. Wedi can be 2 times more expensive per sheet than standard cement sheet. However, many contractors argue that the savings in labor time (often saving 1–2 days of work) more than offsets the material cost.
To maintain the warranty, you must use the entire Wedi system, including their proprietary fasteners and 610 Adhesive Sealant. Mixing brands can void the protection and compromise the seal.
